Our Board

Sir David Nicholson KCB CBE


Sir David Nicholson joined the Trust as Chairman in December 2018.

Sir David Nicholson’s career in NHS management spanned more than 30 years and included the most senior posts in the service. He was Chief Executive of the NHS for seven years from 2006-2013 and then, following a major national restructure, became the first Chief Executive of the organisation now known as NHS England from 2013-2014.

Since his retirement from the NHS in 2014, he has taken on a number of international roles providing advice and guidance to governments and organisations focused on improving population health and universal healthcare coverage.

He has worked in China, Brazil, the USA, Europe and the Middle East, independently, and in association with the World Health Organisation, and World Bank. Sir David chaired the State Health Services organisation of the Republic of Cyprus and until recently was also the Chair of the Metropolitan Group of Hospitals, Nairobi.

Sir David is Chair of the Universal Health Coverage Forum of the World Innovation Summit for Health. Other roles include adjunct Professor of Global Health at the Institute of Global Health Imperial College, Advisor to the British Association of Physicians of Indian Origin and Lancet Commissioner to Global Surgery.

Sir David’s contribution to healthcare was recognised by the award of the CBE in 2008, and he was knighted by Her Majesty the Queen in 2010. He lives in Worcestershire with his wife and two children.

Matthew Hopkins

Chief Executive

Matthew Hopkins joined the NHS as a nurse before moving into health management, taking on senior roles in a number of large NHS organisations in London.

He has been chief executive of two large acute trusts – Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals and, most recently, Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals which he successfully led out of quality special measures in 2017.

Paul Brennan

Chief Operating Officer and Deputy Chief Executive

Paul Brennan joined the Trust on 1 October 2018 as Chief Operating Officer and Deputy Chief Executive of Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust.

Paul brings more than 25 years’ experience as an NHS Director and a proven track record of delivering major service change, service and performance improvement and business development.

He joins the Trust from a similar role at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust.

Mike Hallissey

Chief Medical Officer

Mike Hallissey joined Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust  from University Hospitals Birmingham where he worked as Deputy Medical Director and Director of Education.

After more than 27 years’ in the NHS as consultant surgeon , Mike joins the trust bringing with him his extensive experience of clinical leadership and management roles.

Vicky Morris

Chief Nursing Officer

Vicky Morris joined Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust in March 2017 from Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board (BCUHB) where she worked alongside the Nursing and Medical Directors to support their Quality Improvement journey.

Vicky has over 10 years’ experience at Executive Board level and was nominated onto the NHS Top Leaders programme in 2010.

Vicky has also held Chief Nurse and Director roles at Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust, Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital in

Shropshire and the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Trust in Birmingham.

Robert Toole

Chief Finance Officer

Robert is a highly experienced finance director with extensive experience in the NHS and the private sector. He was most recently Improvement Director at North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust, where he led a major programme of efficiency improvements for the Trust as well as supporting partnership working with local commissioners to deliver system-wide cost reductions.

Kimara Sharpe

Company Secretary

Kimara joined the Trust in April 2013. She has over 30 years' NHS experience, which started as a nursing career in which she specialised in renal dialysis.

More recently she has worked on the commissioning side of the NHS as Director of Corporate Affairs at Redditch and Bromsgrove PCT and then Director of Governance, Primary Care and Communications at Dudley PCT. She advised NHS West Mercia Cluster on their governance arrangements and was interim Chief Officer for Dudley CCG. Prior to this post, she was Board Secretary to the NHS Black Country, Birmingham and Solihull PCT Cluster.

Richard Haynes

Director of Communications and Engagement

Richard Haynes joined our Trust on 6th September 2017 as Director of Communications and Engagement.

Richard is a strategic communications, public relations and engagement professional, with extensive NHS board level experience in challenged, high-profile and politically sensitive organisations.

With a career background in newspaper journalism and private sector PR, he became Worcestershire Acute Hospitals’ first Head of Communications in 2001 - a post he held until 2010. Since then he has taken on a number of senior in-house and interim/consultancy roles in NHS organisations across the country, on both the provider and commissioner side.

Richard is a Chartered PR Practitioner, a status awarded by the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR) in recognition of his high professional standards, integrity and commitment to professional development. He is also a mentor on the CIPR’s national mentoring scheme for PR professionals.

Richard lives in Worcestershire with his wife and two children who are both at school locally.

He says: “Coming back to this Trust feels like coming home. This is where I met the people who opened my eyes to the challenges and rewards of working for the NHS, and it’s where I decided that the NHS was where I wanted to spend the rest of my working life.

“I’ve seen the difference that good communications and effective engagement can make to organisations which are striving to turn themselves around, and I’m genuinely excited by the prospect of working with my new colleagues, our patients and our local community to help build a better future for our hospitals.”

Tina Ricketts

Director of People and Culture

Tina Ricketts joined Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust as Director of People and Culture on 29 January 2018.

Tina is a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development and has been a Director of Human Resources within the NHS since 2011. Over the last 15 years, she has held a range of senior management positions within the health and care system in Gloucestershire predominately working in the community services provider.  Until recently she was the workforce lead for Gloucestershire Sustainability and Transformation Partnership.

Tina has successfully obtained the Investors in People accreditation for her last three employers winning regional awards for HR best practice. She has a  special interest in leadership development and is an accredited assessor for the NHS leadership Framework, Leadership Qualities Framework, and Pi Coaching for Behaviour and Results.

Vikki Lewis

Chief Digital Officer

Vikki Lewis was appointed as the new Chief Digital Officer at the end of January 2020.

Vikki joined us from Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust where she was Chief Information Officer. She has also held a number of senior roles across provider and commissioner organisations. 

Vikki is the executive lead for all our digital services including strategic and operational IT, Information, Performance, and Business Intelligence, Information Governance and Data Quality.

Jo Newton

Director of Strategy and Planning

Jo Newton joined us at Director of Strategy and Planning in April 2020.

Jo is a hugely experienced NHS board director and award-winning marketeer with extensive public and private sector experience and a strong commitment to putting patients first by delivering service transformation in healthcare organisations and across systems.

She served for three years as the independent Chair of the Future of Acute Hospital Services in Worcestershire (FoAHSW) Programme Board. 

Jo has board-level experience in provider and commissioning organisations and is ideally placed to build on the progress we have made over the past couple of years as we move towards more integrated working and a population health-based approach to care.

Anita Day

Non-Executive Director

Anita Day joined the Board of Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust on 1 August 2018 as a Non-Executive Director.

Anita is a Chartered Accountant, executive leader and business coach, with an international strategy consulting background. She is currently working for IBM Global Business Services leading Europe-wide strategic culture transformation and workforce strategy initiatives which include a focus on management development, coaching and career guidance and improving diversity and inclusion.

Anita also has extensive experience of the private and not-for-profit sectors. She was brought up and went to school in Worcestershire, and her family connections to the NHS include her younger daughter, who is a junior doctor. A respected business and political commentator, Anita is a regular guest on local political TV shows.

Anita Day’s term of office runs from 1 August 2018 until 31 July 2020. She is entitled to receive a remuneration of £6,157 per year.

Dr William Tunnicliffe

Non-Executive Director

Dr Tunnicliffe is currently working as a Consultant in Adult Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust.

He has a wealth of experience both as a doctor and senior clinical manager working in Birmingham and Auckland, New Zealand. During his training he also spent time working in Worcester and currently lives with his family in Hallow.

Steve Williams

Non-Executive Director

Steve Williams is a finance professional with extensive experience in financial and operational management, mainly within professional services and IT, working both at Board and senior partner level as well as hands-on roles.

Steve is a qualified chartered accountant with experience of strategic development, financial management and operational management for a number of large, complex companies. His previous roles have included Director of Finance for Price Waterhouse Management Consultants with responsibility for all European operations; Finance Director for Atos UK; and Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer for Maples and Calder, an international law and financial services organisation.

Steve also holds a number of voluntary roles. He is currently a governor at Warwickshire College Group, as well as volunteer for the charity Sported, acting as mentor and adviser to organisations involved in providing sport for development to disadvantaged young people.  He is also director of InUnity – a not-for-profit organisation which seeks to engage with and empower disadvantaged young people.

In his role as Non-Executive Director Steve will be an integral member of the wider Board team, comprising executive and non-executive roles, and attending Board and key committee meetings, including the Audit and Assurance Committee.

Steve has also been appointed as the lead Non-Executive Director responsible for Freedom to Speak Up.

Mark Yates

Non-Executive Director

Mark Yates joins us as non-executive director at Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust.

Following a full career Mark retired from the fire service in 2016. For the last six years of his career, in the position of CEO/Chief Fire Officer, he led Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service and also worked on many national level initiatives including leading the Chief Fire Officers' Association Health and Safety reference. During Mark's professional career he gained a reputation as being operationally focussed whilst driving organisational improvements and delivering significant efficiency gains.

Mark is involved in his local community as both a school governor and a Board member of the Worcestershire Community Foundation. 

Colin Horwath

Associate Non-Executive Director

Colin Horwath is a qualified accountant, who has spent his career working with the public sector. He was a partner with KPMG, based in Birmingham, for 20 years, leading audit and advisory assignments. His internal responsibilities included heading the national public sector practice.

Since leaving KPMG he continued his involvement with the public sector, serving as Deputy Chair of Birmingham Women’s and Children’s NHS Foundation Trust until May 2018. He is currently a Non-Executive Director of Birmingham Children’s Trust, as well as a partner in a small executive recruitment and search firm, and Governor of a High School in Stafford.

Colin’s term of office runs from February 1, 2019 for 12 months.

Dame Julie Moore

Non-Executive Director

Dame Julie Moore joined the Board of Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust as an Associate Non-Executive Director from 1 October 2018 for a period of six months, after stepping down from her most recent post as Chief Executive of University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust in September.

Dame Julie joined the NHS as a graduate nurse at the start of a career which has spanned four decades and seen her become one of the most renowned chief executives in the health service.

Most recently she brought together two of Birmingham’s largest NHS hospital trusts – University Hospitals Birmingham and Heart of England NHS Foundation Trusts – to form one of the biggest teaching hospital trusts in England, employing more than 20,000 staff.

Richard Oosterom

Associate Non-Executive Director

Richard is an experienced senior executive who worked most of his career in the IT and technology sector throughout Europe and in the US and Asia.

During his commercial career of more than 30 years, he has built a track record in business turnaround, growth acceleration and major transformation, including mergers and acquisitions and right-shoring.

Richard currently provides consulting and interim management services for large organisations in transformation and is an active mentor for start-ups, especially in Healthcare and Healthtech.
